Proportion – worksheets to print

Proportional relationships: complete tables of values, calculate via one item, compare offers by the price per item and check whether a relationship is proportional.

  • Choose the number of tasks and the difficulty yourself
  • With an answer sheet and, if you like, a QR code to the answers
  • At three levels (★ to ★★★) and as group A and B
  • As a single worksheet or as a task on a mixed worksheet
This is how it looks on the worksheet – with new numbers every time.
Understand & practise together

Proportion: explained simply

In a proportional relationship, two quantities change in the same ratio. For example, twice as many items cost twice as much when the unit price stays fixed.

How to work it out

  • The value for one unit stays constant. Find it by dividing total value by quantity.
  • Go from the known quantity to one unit, then to the requested quantity. In a table, change both matching values by the same factor.

An example, step by step

3 notebooks cost €6. How much do 5 identical notebooks cost?

  1. Work back to one notebook: €6 : 3 = €2.
  2. Scale up to five: €2 · 5 = €10.
  3. 5 notebooks cost €10. The unit price stays €2.

Understand other variations

Compare prices

Pack A: 4 items for €6, or €1.50 each. Pack B: 6 items for €8.40, or €1.40 each. B is cheaper per item.

Is it proportional?

A taxi fare with a fixed starting charge is not proportional to distance: twice the distance does not mean twice the total fare. Check whether the value per unit really stays constant.

Your turn

2 kg of apples cost €5. How much do 3 kg cost at the same price per kilogram?

Show the answer and method

1 kg costs €5 : 2 = €2.50. So 3 kg cost 3 · €2.50 = €7.50.
