Bar charts: explained simply
A bar chart shows amounts using bars. Each bar's height represents the value of a category.
How to work it out
- Read the labels and scale first. A square or interval may represent 1, 2, 5 or more.
- Read each bar's height against the numbered axis. Add for “altogether”; subtract for “how many more”.
An example, step by step
Each interval on the scale represents 5. A bar is four intervals high.
- Find the value of one interval: 5.
- Four intervals give 4 · 5 = 20.
- The bar represents 20, not 4.
Understand other variations
Draw bars
On a scale in fives, a bar representing 15 must be three intervals high. The tallest bar shows the most frequent category; the shortest shows the least frequent.
Your turn
Bar A shows 25 and bar B shows 15. How many more does A show?
Show the answer and method
25 − 15 = 10. A shows 10 more.
