Magic squares: explained simply
In a magic square, every row, every column and both long diagonals have the same sum: the magic total.
How to work it out
- Use a complete row, column or diagonal to find the magic total if it is not given.
- If a line has just one missing number, subtract its known numbers from the magic total. Check each new number in the crossing lines too.
An example, step by step
The magic total is 15. One row contains 8, □, 6.
- Add the known numbers: 8 + 6 = 14.
- The missing amount is 15 − 14 = 1. Put 1 in the gap.
- Check: 8 + 1 + 6 = 15. Then check the column containing the 1 as well.
Your turn
Magic total 15, column 6, 7, □: what is missing?
Show the answer and method
15 − 6 − 7 = 2. Check: 6 + 7 + 2 = 15.
