Symbol puzzles – worksheets to print
Each symbol stands for a number: the first row gives the first number, and that leads to the next.

Symbol puzzles: explained simply
Each symbol stands for a fixed number. Use the equations to discover the values step by step.
How to work it out
- The same symbol has the same value throughout a puzzle. In these puzzles, different symbols have different values.
- Start with a line containing only one kind of symbol. Substitute known values into the next lines. Multiplication still comes before addition and subtraction.
An example, step by step
Star + star = 8. Star + circle = 7.
- Two identical stars make 8, so one star is 8 : 2 = 4.
- Substitute 4 into the second line: 4 + circle = 7.
- The circle is 7 − 4 = 3. Check: 4 + 4 = 8 and 4 + 3 = 7.
Understand other variations
With multiplication
For star · star = 16, these tasks use the positive whole number 4. If a line contains addition and multiplication, calculate the product first after substituting.
Your turn
Circle + circle = 10. Circle + triangle = 8. What is the triangle?
Show the answer and method
Circle = 10 : 2 = 5. Triangle = 8 − 5 = 3.
