Lengths & weights – worksheets to print
Convert lengths, weights, capacities and, from grade 5, units of area, e.g. 1 m = 100 cm or 1 m² = 100 dm².
- Choose the number of tasks and the difficulty yourself
- With an answer sheet and, if you like, a QR code to the answers
- At three levels (★ to ★★★) and as group A and B
- As a single worksheet or as a task on a mixed worksheet
Lengths & weights: explained simply
A measurement can be written in different units. Converting units does not change the length, mass, capacity or area itself.
How to work it out
- To a smaller unit: multiply by the conversion factor. To a larger unit: divide by it.
- Examples: 1 cm = 10 mm, 1 m = 100 cm, 1 km = 1,000 m; 1 kg = 1,000 g, 1 t = 1,000 kg; 1 l = 1,000 ml.
An example, step by step
Convert 2 m 35 cm to centimetres.
- 2 m is 2 · 100 = 200 cm.
- Add the remaining 35 cm: 200 + 35 = 235.
- So 2 m 35 cm = 235 cm.
Understand other variations
Decimals
1.5 kg = 1,500 g. Conversely, 750 g = 0.75 kg. The numerical value becomes smaller when you use the larger unit.
Area units
Adjacent square units differ by a factor of 100: 1 m² = 100 dm² and 1 dm² = 100 cm². So 1 m² = 10,000 cm². Square metres and centimetres measure different things.
Your turn
How many grams are 3 kg 250 g?
Show the answer and method
3,000 g + 250 g = 3,250 g.
