Scale – worksheets to print
Use the scale to calculate from the map to real life and back – and work out the scale yourself.
- Choose the number of tasks and the difficulty yourself
- With an answer sheet and, if you like, a QR code to the answers
- At three levels (★ to ★★★) and as group A and B
- As a single worksheet or as a task on a mixed worksheet
Scale: explained simply
A scale connects a length on a map or plan with the corresponding length in real life.
How to work it out
- A scale of 1 : 100 means 1 cm on the plan represents 100 cm in real life.
- Multiply to go from plan to real life; divide to go back. To find the scale itself, write both lengths in the same unit first.
An example, step by step
A room measures 4 cm on a plan with scale 1 : 100.
- Each centimetre on the plan represents 100 cm in real life.
- 4 · 100 = 400 cm.
- 400 cm = 4 m. The real room is 4 m long.
Understand other variations
Work backwards
6 m is 600 cm. At scale 1 : 100, the plan length is 600 : 100 = 6 cm.
Find the scale
2 cm on a map represents 1 km. Convert: 1 km = 100,000 cm. Then 100,000 : 2 = 50,000. The scale is 1 : 50,000.
Your turn
Scale 1 : 1,000, map length 3 cm: what is the real distance?
Show the answer and method
3 · 1,000 = 3,000 cm = 30 m.
