Time spans – worksheets to print
How long does something take? Work out the start, the length and the end.
- Choose the number of tasks and the difficulty yourself
- With an answer sheet and, if you like, a QR code to the answers
- At three levels (★ to ★★★) and as group A and B
- As a single worksheet or as a task on a mixed worksheet
Time spans: explained simply
Start time, duration and end time are connected. If two are known, you can calculate the third.
How to work it out
- Start + duration = end. To find the start, work backwards from the end.
- An hour has 60 minutes; a day has 24 hours. To find a duration, count to the next whole hour, then continue.
An example, step by step
A film starts at 14:45 and ends at 16:10. How long does it last?
- From 14:45 to 15:00 is 15 minutes.
- From 15:00 to 16:00 is 1 hour, followed by another 10 minutes.
- Altogether: 1 hour 25 minutes, or 85 minutes.
Understand other variations
Across midnight
From 23:30 to 00:15 the next day is 30 minutes to midnight plus another 15 minutes: 45 minutes in total.
Your turn

Show the answer and method
