Reflection: explained simply

Reflecting creates a matching image on the other side of a mirror line. Every point and its reflection are equally far from the line.

How to work it out

  • Count the distance perpendicular to the mirror line and transfer it to the other side.
  • A vertical mirror line swaps left and right. A horizontal mirror line swaps above and below.

An example, step by step

A square is in the second column to the left of a vertical mirror line.

  1. Stay in the same row.
  2. Count to the second column of squares on the right of the line.
  3. Shade that square. Both squares have the same distance from the line.

Your turn

Where is the reflection of a square directly above a horizontal mirror line?

Show the answer and method

Directly below it, in the same column and at the same distance from the line.
