Area & perimeter: explained simply
Area describes how much a shape covers. Perimeter describes the length of its outer boundary.
How to work it out
- On squared paper, count covered unit squares for area. A rectangle has length · width square units.
- For perimeter, count edges along the outside. For a rectangle: 2 · length + 2 · width.
An example, step by step
A rectangle is 4 squares long and 3 squares wide.
- Area: 3 rows of 4 squares give 4 · 3 = 12 square units.
- Perimeter: the outside measures 4 + 3 + 4 + 3 = 14 length units.
- These describe different things: 12 squares inside, 14 unit edges around the outside.
Understand other variations
Irregular shapes
Count squares row by row. For perimeter, trace the entire outer boundary, including indentations. Shared edges between two shaded squares are inside and do not count towards the perimeter.
Your turn
Find the area and perimeter of a 5 × 2 rectangle of unit squares.
Show the answer and method
Area: 5 · 2 = 10 square units. Perimeter: 5 + 2 + 5 + 2 = 14 length units.
