Volume & cuboids: explained simply
Volume tells you how much space a solid occupies. Imagine a cuboid filled with equal-sized cubes arranged in layers.
How to work it out
- Volume of a cuboid = length · width · height. All three lengths must use the same unit.
- Adjacent cubic units differ by a factor of 1,000: 1 dm³ = 1,000 cm³ and 1 m³ = 1,000 dm³. Also, 1 dm³ = 1 l and 1 cm³ = 1 ml.
An example, step by step
A cuboid is 4 cm long, 3 cm wide and 2 cm high.
- One layer contains 4 · 3 = 12 cubes of 1 cm³ each.
- There are 2 layers: 12 · 2 = 24.
- The volume is 24 cm³.
Understand other variations
Convert units
2 l = 2 dm³ = 2,000 cm³. Conversely, 500 cm³ = 500 ml = 0.5 l. In cube drawings, include cubes hidden inside the solid.
Your turn
What is the volume of a cuboid with sides 5 cm, 2 cm and 3 cm?
Show the answer and method
