Percentages: explained simply
Per cent means “out of one hundred”. 25% is 25 out of 100 equal parts of a whole.
How to work it out
- Each square in a hundred grid represents 1%.
- To find p% of an amount, calculate amount : 100 · p. Use familiar shares directly: 50% is half and 25% is one quarter.
An example, step by step
What is 25% of €80?
- 25% = 25/100 = 1/4.
- Divide €80 by 4: 80 : 4 = 20.
- 25% of €80 is €20. Four such quarters make €80 again.
Understand other variations
Fraction, decimal and percentage
1/2 = 0.5 = 50%. Divide a percentage by 100 to write it as a decimal. For 35%, shade 35 out of 100 squares.
