Understand & practise together

Comparing: explained simply

Decide which side has the greater value or whether both sides are equal.

How to work it out

  • < means “less than”, > means “greater than”, and = means “equal to”.
  • If one or both sides contain calculations, work out their values before comparing them.

An example, step by step

8 + 4 □ 15 − 2

  1. Left: 8 + 4 = 12.
  2. Right: 15 − 2 = 13.
  3. 12 is less than 13. So 8 + 4 < 15 − 2.

Your turn

Choose the correct sign: 6 · 3 □ 20 − 2.

Show the answer and method

Both sides equal 18. The correct sign is =.
