Twenty frame & hundred square: explained simply
A twenty or hundred frame arranges dots in rows. It helps you recognise amounts without counting every dot separately.
How to work it out
- A full row contains 10 dots. Groups of five help you recognise amounts quickly.
- For addition, combine the two dot amounts. For drawing tasks, fill the requested number of positions.
An example, step by step
One row is full and there are 4 more dots below it. How many dots are there?
- The full row counts as 10.
- The second row contains 4.
- Altogether: 10 + 4 = 14 dots.
Your turn
A hundred frame has 3 full rows of ten and 6 extra dots. How many dots are there?
Show the answer and method
3 · 10 + 6 = 36 dots.
