Place value chart: explained simply
A digit's position determines its value. A place-value chart shows the units, tens, hundreds and larger bundles in a number.
How to work it out
- From right to left are units, tens, hundreds, thousands and so on. Each place to the left is worth ten times as much.
- Fill every needed place. A 0 holds the position when there are no bundles of that size.
An example, step by step
Enter 304 in a place-value chart.
- 304 has 3 hundreds, 0 tens and 4 units.
- On the German chart, write 3 under H (hundreds), 0 under Z (tens) and 4 under E (units).
- Check: 3 · 100 + 0 · 10 + 4 · 1 = 304.
Understand other variations
Read dots or build numbers
One dot in the hundreds column means 100, not 1. Two dots under H, three under Z and five under E make 235. For larger numbers, the chart extends to millions and billions.
Your turn
Which number has 5 hundreds, 2 tens and 0 units?
Show the answer and method
500 + 20 + 0 = 520.
