Rounding & estimating: explained simply
Rounding replaces a number with a nearby multiple of ten, one hundred or another requested place value. You can then estimate answers.
How to work it out
- Look at the digit immediately to the right of the rounding place: 0 to 4 means round down; 5 to 9 means round up.
- For whole numbers, the digits to the right become zeros. To estimate, calculate with the rounded numbers.
An example, step by step
Round 347 to the nearest ten.
- The rounding place is the tens digit, 4.
- The digit immediately to its right is 7, so round up.
- 347 ≈ 350. The sign ≈ means “approximately equal to”.
Understand other variations
Estimate a result
347 + 228, rounded to hundreds: 300 + 200 = 500. This is an estimate; the exact answer, 575, need not equal it.
Your turn
Round 652 to the nearest hundred.
Show the answer and method
The tens digit is 5, so round up: 652 ≈ 700.
