Picture sums: explained simply

Pictures show counters being added or taken away. Write a matching addition or subtraction calculation.

How to work it out

  • Putting more counters down means addition: starting amount + extra amount.
  • Taking counters away means subtraction: starting amount − removed amount. The answer is the amount left.

An example, step by step

You see 8 counters, with 3 crossed out.

  1. There were 8 counters at the start.
  2. The 3 crossed-out counters are taken away.
  3. 5 remain. The calculation is 8 − 3 = 5.

Your turn

2 counters are added to 4 counters. Which calculation fits?

Show the answer and method

4 + 2 = 6.
