Doubling & halving: explained simply
Doubling means taking the same amount twice. Halving means sharing an amount into two equal parts.
How to work it out
- Find double a number by adding it to itself or multiplying it by 2.
- Find half a number by dividing it by 2. Doubling and halving undo each other.
An example, step by step
Double 7 and halve 14.
- Take two groups of 7: 7 + 7 = 14.
- Split 14 into two equal groups: 14 : 2 = 7.
- Each group contains 7. That is why 7 is half of 14.
Your turn
What is double 9? What is half of 18?
Show the answer and method
9 + 9 = 18. Half of 18 is 9.
