Empty number line: explained simply
On an empty number line, split an addition or subtraction into manageable jumps.
How to work it out
- Jump right to add and left to subtract.
- The jump sizes must add up to exactly the number being added or subtracted. Use multiples of ten or one hundred as stopping points.
An example, step by step
38 + 7
- Start at 38. You need 2 to reach the next multiple of ten, 40.
- Split 7 into 2 + 5. First jump +2 to 40.
- Then jump +5 to 45. So 38 + 7 = 45.
Understand other variations
Jump backwards
For 43 − 7, first jump −3 to 40, then −4 to 36. You have subtracted 7 altogether. Larger numbers can also be split into hundreds and tens.
Your turn
Calculate 56 + 8 via the next multiple of ten.
Show the answer and method
56 + 4 = 60, then 60 + 4 = 64. The jumps 4 + 4 make 8.
