Order of operations – worksheets to print
Work out expressions with times and divide before plus and minus, and with brackets, e.g. (12 + 8) · 3.
- Choose the number of tasks and the difficulty yourself
- With an answer sheet and, if you like, a QR code to the answers
- At three levels (★ to ★★★) and as group A and B
- With a solution word or a check number so children can check themselves
- As a single worksheet or as a task on a mixed worksheet
Order of operations: explained simply
When a calculation contains several operation signs, the order of operations tells you what to do first.
How to work it out
- Calculate brackets first. The same rules apply inside them.
- Multiplication and division come before addition and subtraction. Operations of equal priority are worked out from left to right.
An example, step by step
3 + 4 · 5
- Multiplication comes first: 4 · 5 = 20.
- Keep the rest of the expression: 3 + 20.
- 3 + 20 = 23. So 3 + 4 · 5 = 23.
Understand other variations
With brackets
For (3 + 4) · 5, calculate the bracket first: 3 + 4 = 7. Then 7 · 5 = 35. Here the brackets change the answer.
Operations of equal priority
For 24 : 6 · 2, first calculate 24 : 6 = 4, then 4 · 2 = 8. Multiplication does not take priority over division.
Your turn
Calculate 20 − 3 · 4.
Show the answer and method
First 3 · 4 = 12. Then 20 − 12 = 8.
