Calculation wheels: explained simply
Each section of a calculation wheel has a matching inner and outer number. The number in the centre applies to the whole wheel.
How to work it out
- Inner number · centre number = outer number.
- If the inner number is missing, divide the outer number by the centre number. To discover the centre, divide outer by inner in a complete pair.
An example, step by step
The centre is 5 and the inner number is 3. What goes outside?
- The centre number 5 tells you to multiply every inner number by 5.
- Calculate 3 · 5 = 15. Write 15 outside.
- Check backwards: 15 : 5 = 3.
Understand other variations
Discover the centre
Inner 4 and outer 24 reveal the centre: 24 : 4 = 6. Check 6 against the second complete pair too.
Your turn
Centre 6, outer number 42: which inner number is missing?
Show the answer and method
42 : 6 = 7. Check: 7 · 6 = 42.
