Number walls: explained simply
In a number wall, two neighbouring bricks support the brick directly above them. Add their numbers to find its value.
How to work it out
- Going up: lower left brick + lower right brick = brick above.
- If one lower brick is missing, calculate: upper brick − known lower brick.
An example, step by step
The bottom row is 3, 4, 2. Fill the two rows above it.
- Above 3 and 4, write 3 + 4 = 7.
- Above 4 and 2, write 4 + 2 = 6. The middle row is 7, 6.
- At the top, write 7 + 6 = 13.
Understand other variations
Gaps inside the wall
If the upper brick is 11 and the lower left brick is 4, the lower right brick is 11 − 4 = 7. First find a group of three connected bricks with two known values, then work outwards from there.
Four rows
The rule stays the same. Fill each brick for which you already have enough information until the wall is complete.
Your turn
The bottom row is 2, 5, 1. What are the middle row and the top?
Show the answer and method
Middle row: 2 + 5 = 7 and 5 + 1 = 6. Top: 7 + 6 = 13.
