Square numbers & powers: explained simply
A power is a short way to write repeated multiplication of the same number. The small raised number counts the factors.
How to work it out
- 3⁴ means 3 · 3 · 3 · 3. The 3 is the base and the 4 is the exponent.
- To square a number, multiply it by itself: 5² = 5 · 5 = 25.
An example, step by step
Calculate 2⁴.
- The exponent 4 means four factors of 2: 2 · 2 · 2 · 2.
- Work in steps: 2 · 2 = 4, then 4 · 2 = 8.
- Multiply by 2 once more: 8 · 2 = 16. So 2⁴ = 16.
Understand other variations
Find the base or exponent
For □² = 49, these tasks ask for the positive whole number 7, because 7 · 7 = 49. For 2^□ = 8, count the factors in 2 · 2 · 2: the exponent is 3. Powers of ten work the same way: 10³ = 1,000.
Your turn
Write 3 · 3 · 3 as a power and calculate it.
Show the answer and method
3³ = 27.
