Methods of calculating – worksheets to print
Calculating in steps with a clever mind: compare and name other children's methods, fill in the steps in between and tick the methods that suit a calculation.
- Choose the number of tasks and the difficulty yourself
- With an answer sheet and, if you like, a QR code to the answers
- At three levels (★ to ★★★) and as group A and B
- As a single worksheet or as a task on a mixed worksheet
Methods of calculating: explained simply
There are often several correct ways to solve a problem. Compare methods, complete steps or choose a method suited to the numbers.
How to work it out
- Step by step: split the second number. By place value: calculate with matching places, then combine the partial answers.
- Use a nearby easier calculation and compensate for the change. Doubling or counting up can also make a problem easier.
An example, step by step
Calculate 48 + 29 using a nearby easier calculation.
- 29 is close to 30. First calculate 48 + 30 = 78.
- You added 1 too much, so subtract it again.
- 78 − 1 = 77. So 48 + 29 = 77.
Understand other variations
Other useful methods
Step by step: 48 + 20 = 68, then +9 = 77. Near doubles: 24 + 25 = 24 + 24 + 1 = 49. For 63 − 58, count up: 2 from 58 to 60 and 3 more to 63, making 5 altogether.
Compare or complete methods
First read how the child in the example changed or split the numbers. Fill missing steps to match that method. When choosing a method, several answers may be sensible.
Your turn
Calculate 57 + 19 using a nearby easier calculation.
Show the answer and method
57 + 20 = 77. Then subtract 1: 76.
