Estimating – worksheets to print

First estimate with rounded numbers, then calculate exactly – or use the estimate to see which answer can be right.

  • Choose the number of tasks and the difficulty yourself
  • With an answer sheet and, if you like, a QR code to the answers
  • At three levels (★ to ★★★) and as group A and B
  • As a single worksheet or as a task on a mixed worksheet
This is how it looks on the worksheet – with new numbers every time.
Understand & practise together

Estimating: explained simply

An estimate quickly gives the approximate size of an answer. Use it to decide whether an exact answer is plausible.

How to work it out

  • Replace the numbers with nearby numbers that are easy to calculate with.
  • Calculate approximately and later compare with the exact answer. For division, choose numbers that divide easily.

An example, step by step

398 + 203: estimate first, then calculate exactly.

  1. Round to easy numbers: 398 ≈ 400 and 203 ≈ 200.
  2. Estimate: 400 + 200 = 600.
  3. Exact answer: 398 + 203 = 601. This is close to 600 and fits the estimate.

Understand other variations

Choose an answer

If the choices for 398 + 203 are 61, 601 and 6,001, only 601 is close to the estimated 600.

Multiplication and division

47 · 6 ≈ 50 · 6 = 300. With larger numbers, round both factors, for example 386 · 42 ≈ 400 · 40 = 16,000. For division, use compatible numbers: 2,772 : 36 ≈ 2,800 : 40 = 70.

Your turn

Estimate 198 + 304.

Show the answer and method

For example, 200 + 300 = 500. The exact answer is 502.
