Your own calculations: explained simply
Here you practise a list of problems chosen by you or an adult. Read the whole problem first: do you need to calculate an answer or fill a gap?
How to work it out
- Calculate brackets first, then multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction. Work from left to right for operations of equal priority.
- When you fill a gap, both sides of the equals sign must have the same value.
An example, step by step
(7 + □) · 2 = 20
- The whole bracket is multiplied by 2. Work backwards: 20 : 2 = 10.
- So the bracket must give 7 + □ = 10. Calculate 10 − 7 = 3.
- Check: (7 + 3) · 2 = 10 · 2 = 20.
Understand other variations
Without a gap
For 12 + 3 · 4, first calculate 3 · 4 = 12, then 12 + 12 = 24. Problems may also include decimals and negative numbers.
Your turn
Calculate: 6 + 2 · 5
Show the answer and method
First 2 · 5 = 10, then 6 + 10 = 16.
