Understand & practise together

Column + −: explained simply

In column addition and subtraction, matching place values line up underneath each other. Work from right to left.

How to work it out

  • Line up units, tens and hundreds. For decimals, line up the decimal separators.
  • Ten units make one ten. In addition, carry it into the next column. In subtraction, you can exchange one ten for ten units.

An example, step by step

47 + 38

  1. Units: 7 + 8 = 15. Write 5 in the units column and carry 1 ten.
  2. Tens: 4 + 3 + 1 = 8. Include the carried ten.
  3. The answer is 85. Check: 85 − 38 = 47.

Understand other variations

Subtraction with exchanging

For 52 − 27, exchange one of the 5 tens for 10 units: you now have 4 tens and 12 units. Then 12 − 7 = 5 and 4 − 2 = 2. Answer: 25. Your child's school may use a complementary addition method instead.

Decimals and several addends

Write 12.5 as 12.50 when placing it above 3.75. With several numbers to add, add every digit in the same column, including any carry.

Your turn

Calculate 36 + 28 in columns.

Show the answer and method

6 + 8 = 14: write 4 units and carry 1 ten. 3 + 2 + 1 = 6 tens. Answer: 64.
