Grid method: explained simply
Grid multiplication splits a large multiplication into smaller calculations. Break each number into its place-value parts.
How to work it out
- For example, split 23 into 20 + 3 and 14 into 10 + 4.
- Multiply every part of one number by every part of the other. Add all the partial products at the end.
An example, step by step
23 · 14
- Split: 23 = 20 + 3 and 14 = 10 + 4.
- Fill all four boxes: 20 · 10 = 200, 3 · 10 = 30, 20 · 4 = 80, 3 · 4 = 12.
- Add: 200 + 30 + 80 + 12 = 322. So 23 · 14 = 322.
Understand other variations
One factor has a single digit
For 234 · 3, split only 234: 200 · 3 + 30 · 3 + 4 · 3 = 600 + 90 + 12 = 702. Sometimes you also need to enter the place-value parts at the edges yourself.
Your turn
Calculate 12 · 13 using a grid.
Show the answer and method
100 + 20 + 30 + 6 = 156, from 10 · 10, 2 · 10, 10 · 3 and 2 · 3.
